Sushiya Held a Nationwide Sushi Masters Championship

27 December 2013

Sushiya selected the best sushi masters at a Nationwide Sushi Masters Championship.

The winners are Dmytro Osadchyy, Dmytro Vysokos and Bohdan Movchan who got first, second and third places respectively.

Staff development is one of the biggest priorities for Sushiya restaurant chain. For three consecutive years, Sushiya has been recruiting trainees into the only School of Sushi Masters in Ukraine where everyone can learn the trade in just two weeks. This training program has been recognized by experts as the most successful training project and it got the 2nd place in the HR-Brand Award - 2012 professional competition. Both School of Sushi Masters and Sushi Masters Championship are projects aimed at popularizing the sushi chef profession and the development of young professionals. Through these programs, the network helps young skilled workers develop. Every sushi master at Sushiya has a unique opportunity to become a Japanese cuisine chef in just a year.

Several qualifying competitions (in fish handling, sushi slicing, rolls preparation) which had about 40 participants from all over Ukraine were to identify those who are worthy to compete in the Championship for the grand prize and the title of Sushi Master 2013. And while the qualifying competitions were to determine the contestants' technical skills, the final contestants had to demonstrate how creative and resourceful they are: they had to guess the names of unfamiliar dishes from Japan which were made by the chain's Brand Chef Yana Derevianko. They also had to make a personal roll creation and a roll developed by someone else.

The jury, which included Irina Rumyantseva, the COO of Sushiya,  Yana Derevianko, Sushiya Brand Chef, Taras Podgorny, a Sushi Master winner in the past, Elena Edelkina, the director of Brutto Magazine and Maya Belous, the Deputy chief editor of Human Resources Manager Magazine, determined the winner based on the results of all three competition, who will now carry the title of the Sushi Master 2013. All three winners are sushi masters who work in Kyiv restaurants of the Sushiya chain: Dmytro Osadchyy (1st prize - a Japanese Kasumi knife), Dmytro Vysokos (2nd prize - a rice cooker) and Bohdan Movchan (3rd prize - a set for carving). Moreover, Dmytro Vysokos was awarded a special jury prize for his contribution to the development of the Sushiya network.

Congratulations to the winners and welcome to the Sushiya team!
