Sushiya company among the winners of HR brand 2013 Award

Sushiya won 2nd place in the Capital category with the project Leaders' Workshop aimed at the development of managers within the company.

Sushiya is the fastest growing chain of Japanese restaurants in Ukraine. By December 2013 the chain consisted of 40 restaurants in 13 regions of Ukraine, in addition, Sushiya opens 7-10 restaurants annually throughout the country, which involves hiring 20-30 new staff members of managerial level. The chains employs a total of 1,800 people . A high level of corporate culture and maintaining friendly atmosphere is one of the competitive advantages of the chain in Ukraine. Sushia managers work to ensure those exact goals.

There are no schools that prepare managerial staff for the Food and Beverage industry in Ukraine. The company's policy in the field of HR is focused on staff development and training for the managers' positions within the company. In order to achieve this objective we have developed a program called Leader's Workshop. Best and most proactive restaurant employees go through multilevel selection process based on personal and professional criteria, and by doing that they already prove to have great leadership qualities. Our program is unique - we developed all the training materials ourselves using the best restaurant management practices that we ourselves learned over 6 years of the chain's existence and, at the same time, the best Western educational practices. The program consists of theoretical and practical parts, individual and group sessions that are taught by the mentors - senior restaurant managers and competent professionals.

During the course of a year, we graduate 2-3 groups of managers, and with each new group the program gets improved in accordance with innovative changes in the company and with a new level of professional internal candidates, since the development system of our company covers all categories of staff positions.

Leaders' Workshop as a holistic system allows managers to graduate just in time, in accordance with the new restaurant opennings plan and forecast turnover. Even at early stages young managers are capable of managing restaurants while maintaining a high level of service culture, product quality, cleanliness and hospitality.

In 2013 Leaders' Workshop graduated 35 managers, representing 61% of all the managers in Kiev, and in general over a period of two years, the program has provided 94% of Kiev's restaurant managers, 16 of which have already become directors.

However, the results of the program Leaders' Workshop have not only a practical application, we also see the value of the program in the socio-psychological support and guidance for young people. The staff's interest and trust in the program continues to grow and with each step we have more and more employees who wish to participate in the selection. Candidates for the positions, for many of whom Sushiya is the first place to work, noted a substantial personal growth, qualitatively new awareness of their importance, and feeling the support of competent mentors.

'To my surprise, the most difficult part was to learn how to make rolls. Hands had to get used to and start to feel the knife to be able to cut the roll with one touch! But I managed! It is important to understand the work from within to be able to control it, otherwise the staff might perceive a manager as an incompetent person' - says a program participant Kristina Moiseyeva.

'The process of Sushiya managers recruitment and training is held at the highest level, and we can state with confidence that as a result of the program, we get very rare and valuable specialists for Ukraine, professionals in the field of restaurant management,' - says Karina Kovaleva, Personnel Development Manager at Sushiya.
